Let's welcome the New Year glowing and radiant together! We will start with an intention-setting meditiation. A gentle warm-up will unfold into a 108 sun salutations mala. We will start with all-levels accessible variations, and build to the classic sun salutes. You can pause and resume wherever you like and do any of the variations you feel comfortable with! No pressure, just inspiration and loving support from your teachers Zeni and Jayne! After the sun salutations, we will unwind with yin and restorative postures, breathwork and mantras. Why 108 Sun Salutations? Sun salutations bridge the mind and body through the use of repetitive movements and breath. They warm up your body, focus your mind and align your whole being to your heart's purpose and desires. The number 108 is sacred and signifies a complete cycle, so we do 108 Sun Salutations on special occasions, such as New Year's! The number is spiritual and a pattern that repeats through the Universe. It is: the number of the Upanishads, Hindu spiritual texts, the number of names for Hindu deities, the number of sacred points on the body, the number of sacred sites in India, the distance between the sun and the earth is 108 times the sun's diameter. When we repeat a mantra or affirmation, we aim to do it 108 times for highest effectiveness, counting the times with the beads on a mala. Alternatively, as 1-0-8=9, we can do smaller numbers that add up to 9, like 27 (1/4 of 108) or 54 (1/2 of 108). As always, we invite you to be mindful of your body, and modify the practice as you need to!
This class takes place in our Edgewater studio.
