Stretch to Rest is a class that will help you slow down your body and mind by connecting your breath to gentle movement while soothing your nervous system. The first part of the class will consist of gentle stretches (seated, on the mat, or lying down) and will then transition to more restful passive stretches while being supported by props. During the three parts of class (active stretching, the transition, and passive stretching), I will encourage you to keep a beginner’s mind, notice your body, mind, and breath, as well as explore your stillness. “We don’t use our body to get into a pose, we use the pose to get into our body”- Bernie Clark. My intention is for you to practice patience and self-compassion as you give yourself permission to notice, feel, and honor the sensations in your body and mind. My classes revolve around two of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras: Sthira Sukhamāsanam (2.46): finding the balance between steadiness and ease, and Yogaś citta vrtti nirodhah (1.2): stilling the fluctuations of the mind. Different pranayama techniques, meditations, music, mantras, affirmations, and mudras will be used. Essential oils and hands on adjustments may be offered and are optional. Occasional sound instruments may be used in savasana to help facilitate a deeper state of rest and relaxation. My hope is that you will find this class to be an introspective practice with a balance of stretch to rest.
