Our beginner level yoga teacher training provides a well-rounded exploration into all of the facets of yoga, including: cosmology, history, philosophy, breathing, postures, meditation, and relaxation. Even if you do not intend to teach, this experience will deepen your practice and understanding of all eight limbs of yoga, and provide a safe space for personal growth and transformation. The training is an intensive immersion into the practices of hatha yoga from a blend of lineages that compliment each other well. We will work with the therapeutic approach of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, in a lineage that has come to be known as “viniyoga.” We will also work with the teachings of Swami Kripalvananda, founder of the lineage of Kripalu Yoga. Kripalu means compassion, and is a trauma sensitive heart-centered approach which focuses on breathing and allowing innate wisdom to guide you as you move through your practice. Kripalu Yoga has roots in kundalini, and tantra. Both Viniyoga and Kripalu Yoga evolve and change with the times. These traditions agree that yoga practices should be tailored to the student’s specific age, physical condition, culture, emotional state, personality, and constitution. In this way, the practice is designed to fit the person, rather than the student trying to fit into a pre-determined practice.
We will look deeply into anatomy and physiology as it applies to yoga- with a strong emphasis on creating functional movement patterns and releasing chronic tension and stress from the body and nervous system. Students will learn to approach their practice and teaching with compassion, safety, and longevity in mind, rather than striving for an idealized version of a pose. We will also explore lifestyle choices, diet, breath, movement, meditation, and relaxation through the lens of Ayurveda- the sister science to yoga and the traditional medicine of India. Students will learn the basics on different body types, and daily self-care techniques. It is our intention that students of this training come away with the ability to choose the tools that bring them into a state of balance within their own lives, and to skillfully guide their students in doing the same. This transformational process will engage all the layers of being- physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It is far more than learning to teach a yoga class; it is about the journey of self-study and self-realization. We would be honored to be a part of your journey. May your studies be illuminating.
